Add bridges to an SVG automatically

An island is a piece of paper that touches no edge of its sheet, so it drops out when you cut. Drop in your SVG and every island gets a bridge to the paper around it.

How it works

  1. Drop in your SVG. A layered shadow box file or a single cut file. If the editor asks how to place it, check the layers and choose Place here.
  2. Bridges are added. Each island is connected with one bridge to the nearest paper that is held, or to the edge of the canvas. One Undo takes them all back.
  3. Adjust, then download. Drag the ends of a bridge to move it, change its width, or add more by hand. Downloads keep the bridges unless you choose to remove them.

What counts as an island

A frame holds every layer by its edges. A piece of paper that reaches any edge of the canvas, even at one corner, stays in place. A piece that reaches no edge is an island: an eye inside a face, the middle of an O, a moon in an open sky.

Islands show in red in the editor until they are connected. Bridges show from the front, so a common finish is to glue the piece in place first and then trim the bridge by hand.

Questions

Can I choose where the bridges go?

Yes. Every bridge can be moved, resized or deleted, and you can add bridges by hand. The automatic ones take the shortest way to paper that is held.

Which files work?

SVG files made of closed shapes: layered shadow box files from other designers, single cut files, and files downloaded from KerfPress. Open lines are skipped, because they have no area to cut.

Is it free?

Adding and editing bridges is free and needs no account. Downloading the result uses your free allowance, a single download or a subscription. See Pricing.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It opens in the editor in your own browser, and the editor works on it there.
